Ecommerce SEO in Sri Lanka: A Guide for Online Stores

How Sri Lankan online stores can rank category and product pages on Google, fix duplicate content, add product schema, use Google Merchant Center and convert more visitors.

Sri Lankan online shopping has grown fast, and so has competition from Daraz, Kapruka, Facebook sellers and international stores. Paid ads and social media get expensive. Ecommerce SEO brings shoppers who are already searching for what you sell, at no cost per click.

Category pages are your biggest opportunity

Shoppers search for categories more than individual products: "office chairs Sri Lanka", "baby clothes online", "gaming laptops price in Sri Lanka". Your category pages should rank for these.

Make category pages strong:

  • A clear H1 that matches the search: "Office Chairs in Sri Lanka"
  • A short introduction above the products, and a longer helpful guide below them: types, sizes, how to choose, delivery
  • Filters that help shoppers, without creating thousands of indexable URLs
  • Internal links to sub-categories and buying guides

Product pages that rank and sell

  • Unique descriptions. Don't copy the manufacturer's text that 50 other stores use.
  • Specifications in a clear table
  • Price in LKR, stock status and delivery time
  • Multiple real photos and video if possible
  • Reviews from real buyers
  • Clear delivery and returns information, including cash on delivery and island-wide delivery

Product structured data

Add Product schema with price, availability and reviews, rendered in the page HTML, not added later by JavaScript:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Product",
  "name": "Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair",
  "image": "https://yourstore.lk/img/mesh-chair.webp",
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "price": "38500",
    "priceCurrency": "LKR",
    "availability": "https://schema.org/InStock"
  }
}

This can show prices and stock in search results. See the structured data guide.

Google Merchant Center

Upload your product feed to Google Merchant Center for free product listings in Google Shopping and image results. It's free traffic many Sri Lankan stores miss.

Fix ecommerce technical problems

Online stores create technical SEO problems by default:

  • Filter and sort URLs: ?color=red&sort=price can create thousands of duplicate pages. Control them with canonical tags, robots.txt or noindex. See canonical tags and duplicate content.
  • Out-of-stock products: keep the page live with "back soon" if it's returning, suggest alternatives, or redirect permanently discontinued products to the nearest category.
  • Pagination: make sure page 2, 3 and so on are crawlable with normal links.
  • Slow pages: product images and apps slow stores down. See image SEO.
  • Thin pages: hundreds of products with one-line descriptions.

Content that drives sales

  • Buying guides: "How to choose a laptop for university in Sri Lanka"
  • Comparisons: "Inverter vs non-inverter AC: which saves more?"
  • Gift guides for Avurudu, Christmas, Vesak and Valentine's Day

Link guides to the relevant categories and products.

Platform tips

  • WooCommerce: flexible, but needs good hosting and careful plugin choices. See the WordPress SEO guide.
  • Shopify: fast and clean, but some URL structures are fixed.
  • Custom builds: full control, but make sure SEO basics are built in.
