A citation is any online mention of your business's name, address and phone number, often called NAP. Citations help Google confirm that your business is real, where it is and how to contact it. When those details are inconsistent across the web, Google becomes less confident, and customers get confused.
Why NAP consistency matters
Imagine your Google profile says "No. 25, Galle Road, Colombo 03", your Facebook page says "25 Galle Rd, Kollupitiya" and an old directory still shows the address you moved from two years ago, with a phone number that no longer works. Google sees three slightly different businesses. Customers may call the wrong number or go to the wrong place.
Consistent details strengthen your local rankings and stop you losing customers.
Decide on one exact format
Pick one way of writing your details and use it everywhere:
- Business name: exactly as registered and on your signboard
- Address: decide on "Road" or "Rd", "Colombo 03" or "Colombo 3", and stick to it
- Phone: one main number in a consistent format, such as +94 11 234 5678
- Website: the same URL, ideally your homepage or location page
Write it down and share it with anyone who manages listings for you.
Where Sri Lankan businesses should be listed
Essential
- Google Business Profile
- Your own website, in the footer and on the contact page
- Facebook page
- Apple Business Connect, for iPhone Maps users
- Bing Places for Business
Industry-specific
- Tourism: TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Agoda and similar platforms
- Restaurants: delivery apps and food review platforms
- Healthcare: doctor channelling platforms
- Professional services: professional bodies and association member lists
- Exporters: export directories and trade association listings
Local directories
Established Sri Lankan business directories and the Yellow Pages-style listings are still worth claiming if they rank in Google for your business name. Quality matters more than quantity.
How to audit your existing citations
- Search Google for your business name, old addresses and phone numbers.
- Make a spreadsheet of every listing you find, with the details shown.
- Mark anything incorrect, outdated or duplicated.
- Log in and update the listings you control.
- Contact other sites to request corrections.
Moving or changing your number?
If your business moves or changes phone number, update Google first, then your website, then every other listing on your spreadsheet. Old details can linger for years if you don't.
Do citations still matter?
Citations are less powerful than they once were compared with reviews, links and your website. But inconsistent details still cause problems, and a set of accurate listings on important platforms remains part of good local SEO.
