A Blog Strategy for Small Businesses That Actually Brings Customers

How small businesses in Sri Lanka can plan, write and promote blog content that ranks on Google and brings enquiries, without publishing every day.

Many small business blogs follow the same path: a burst of posts in the first month, generic topics like "5 Tips for Success", then silence. No traffic, no leads, and the conclusion that "blogging doesn't work".

Blogging works when every post answers a question your customers actually search for, and leads them towards your services.

Why blog at all?

  • Capture early-stage searches: people searching "how much does a roof repair cost" will soon search for a roofer.
  • Build trust: helpful answers show expertise before the first call.
  • Support your service pages: blog posts link to service pages and help them rank.
  • Get cited in AI answers: clear, specific answers are what AI search tools quote.

Step 1: Collect real questions

Your best topics are already in your inbox:

  • Questions customers ask on calls and WhatsApp
  • Objections that come up before people buy
  • Things customers misunderstand
  • Google's "People also ask" boxes for your services

Write them all down. A single business usually has 30 to 50 good questions.

Step 2: Prioritise by business value

Score each topic:

  • Close to buying? "Cost of solar in Sri Lanka" beats "history of solar power".
  • Related to a service you sell?
  • Can you answer better than what ranks now?

Step 3: Group topics into clusters

Pick 3 or 4 main themes linked to your services. Each theme gets a main guide plus supporting posts that link to it and to the relevant service page. This topic cluster structure shows Google depth on a subject.

Example for an accounting firm:

  • Main guide: "Company registration in Sri Lanka"
  • Supporting posts: costs, documents needed, sole proprietor vs private limited, timelines
  • All link to: "Company registration service" page

Step 4: Write posts that answer properly

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph. Then go deeper.
  • Be specific to Sri Lanka: local prices in LKR, local regulations, local examples.
  • Use your experience: real cases, real numbers, real mistakes you've seen.
  • Use clear headings that match related questions.
  • End with a next step: a link to the relevant service or a call to action.

Step 5: Publish consistently, not constantly

Two high-quality posts a month, every month, beats twenty rushed posts once. Consistency builds momentum.

Step 6: Promote each post

  • Share on your Facebook page and LinkedIn
  • Send it to customers who asked that question
  • Use it in WhatsApp replies to common questions
  • Link to it from related pages on your site

Step 7: Update old posts

Every 6 to 12 months, update posts with new prices, rules and examples. Updating a post that already ranks on page two is often faster than writing a new one.

What about AI-written content?

AI tools can help with outlines and drafts, but posts written entirely by AI with no real experience tend to be generic, and generic content doesn't rank or convert. Use AI as an assistant, and add the specifics only you know. More: E-E-A-T explained.
