How to Write Service Pages That Rank and Convert

A practical structure for service pages that rank on Google and turn visitors into enquiries, with section-by-section guidance, examples and common mistakes.

Your service pages are where SEO turns into money. A blog post might attract readers, but people searching "accountant Colombo" or "solar panel installation Kandy" want a page that tells them who you are, what you do, what it costs and how to get started.

Yet most Sri Lankan service pages are a single paragraph and a phone number. Here's how to write one that ranks and converts.

One service, one page

If you offer five services, create five pages. A single "Services" page listing everything can't rank well for any of them. Each service page should target one main keyword group. See keyword research.

The structure that works

1. A clear headline (H1)

Say what you do and where: "Solar Panel Installation in Kandy" beats "Powering a Brighter Tomorrow". Include the main keyword naturally.

2. A short answer in the first lines

In two or three sentences: what the service is, who it's for and why choose you. Many visitors decide here whether to stay. AI search systems also often quote this part.

3. A clear call to action

A button to call, WhatsApp or request a quote, visible without scrolling on mobile.

4. What's included

List exactly what the customer gets. Specifics build trust: "site survey, panel supply, installation, net-metering paperwork and 2 years of maintenance".

5. Who it's for

Describe your typical customers and the problems you solve. Visitors should recognise themselves.

6. How it works

The steps from first contact to finished job. Numbered steps reduce uncertainty.

7. Pricing

Even a starting price or a range helps. "From Rs. 45,000" filters out poor-fit leads and builds trust. Most of your competitors hide prices; showing them is an advantage.

8. Proof

  • Short case studies with real numbers
  • Reviews with names (with permission)
  • Photos of real work, not stock images
  • Certifications, memberships and years of experience

9. FAQs

Answer the real questions customers ask on calls and WhatsApp. This captures long-tail searches and handles objections.

10. Final call to action

Repeat the CTA at the end with your contact details.

Writing tips

  • Use your customers' words. If they say "boarding", don't write "student accommodation".
  • Be specific. Numbers, places, timelines and names beat adjectives.
  • Write for scanning: short paragraphs, clear headings, bullet lists.
  • Show experience. Mention real projects, places and outcomes. This supports E-E-A-T.
  • Avoid fluff like "we are a leading provider of innovative solutions".

How long should it be?

As long as it needs to answer the customer's questions. For most services, that's 600 to 1,500 words. Look at the pages that rank now and aim to be more useful, not just longer.

On-page SEO checklist

  • Main keyword in the title tag, H1 and first paragraph
  • Compelling title tag and meta description
  • Descriptive subheadings
  • Internal links to related services, case studies and blog posts. See internal linking.
  • Optimised images with alt text. See image SEO.
  • Service structured data

Common mistakes

  • Thin pages with one paragraph
  • Copying the same text across services or locations
  • No prices, no proof, no clear next step
  • Burying the phone number in the footer
