Business owners don't need 40 reports. They need one page that answers: is SEO bringing more customers? Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) is free and lets you build exactly that from your Search Console and GA4 data.
What the dashboard should answer
- Are more people finding us on Google?
- Which searches and pages bring them?
- Are those visitors enquiring or buying?
- Is it improving over time?
Everything on the dashboard should help answer one of those questions.
Step 1: Connect your data
- Go to lookerstudio.google.com and create a Blank report.
- Add data: choose the Search Console connector, select your site, and pick Site Impression for overall data.
- Add a second data source: Google Analytics, choosing your GA4 property.
Step 2: Add a date range control
Add a Date range control at the top, defaulting to "Last 28 days" with comparison to the previous period. Every chart will follow it.
Step 3: Search visibility (Search Console)
Add scorecards for:
- Clicks
- Impressions
- Average CTR
- Average position
Turn on the comparison so each shows the change from the previous period.
Below, add a time series chart of clicks and impressions over the last 12 months.
Step 4: Top searches and pages
Add two tables from Search Console:
- Top queries: query, clicks, impressions, CTR, position
- Top pages: landing page, clicks, impressions
Add a filter to exclude branded searches (your business name), so you can see growth from non-branded searches, which is the real measure of SEO.
Step 5: Leads from organic search (GA4)
Add a filter for Session default channel group = Organic Search, then add scorecards for:
- Sessions from organic search
- Key events (enquiries, WhatsApp clicks, calls)
- Purchases and revenue, for online stores
Add a table of landing pages with sessions and key events, so you can see which pages actually bring leads.
Haven't set up key events? Start with the GA4 setup guide and tracking WhatsApp clicks.
Step 6: Keep it to one page
Resist adding everything. A one-page dashboard that the business owner actually reads is worth far more than ten pages nobody opens.
Step 7: Share and schedule
- Share the report with view access to the people who need it
- Schedule email delivery monthly, as a PDF on the first working day
Interpreting it correctly
- Compare year on year where you can. Many Sri Lankan businesses have strong seasons, such as tourism peaks and festive shopping around Avurudu and December.
- Look at trends over months, not daily movements.
- Rankings matter less than enquiries from organic search.
