"Pharmacy near me". "Best kottu near me". "Tyre shop near me open now". These searches happen millions of times a day, mostly on phones, often by someone ready to buy within the hour. If your business doesn't appear, a competitor down the road gets the customer.
How Google handles "near me"
When someone searches "near me", Google uses the searcher's location, from their phone's GPS or network, to find relevant businesses nearby. It then ranks them using the same three local factors as any local search: relevance, distance and prominence.
Many people don't even type "near me" any more. A search for "dentist" on a phone already gets local results, because Google assumes local intent.
You don't need "near me" on your website
A common mistake is stuffing "near me" into page titles and text: "Best Salon Near Me in Colombo". It reads badly and doesn't help. Google already knows where your business is from your Google Business Profile and website.
Instead, make it very clear what you offer and where you are.
How to show up for nearby searches
1. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile
This is the single most important step. Categories, services, hours and location must all be correct. See our Google Business Profile guide.
2. Accurate opening hours
Searches like "open now" filter out businesses that Google thinks are closed. Update hours for Poya days, holidays and seasonal changes.
3. Services listed clearly
If you offer "wheel alignment" but your profile only says "Tyre shop", you may miss searches for the specific service. List each one.
4. Reviews that mention what you do
Reviews mentioning specific services or products help Google connect you with those searches.
5. A fast, mobile-friendly website
"Near me" searchers are on phones and often on mobile data. If your page takes eight seconds to load, they go back and tap the next result. See website speed for Sri Lankan mobile users.
6. One-tap actions
Make it easy to act straight away:
- A click-to-call phone number
- A WhatsApp button
- Directions via Google Maps
- Opening hours visible at the top of the page
7. Location pages for each branch
If you have more than one location, each needs its own page and profile. See SEO for multi-branch businesses.
Measuring "near me" success
In Google Business Profile Performance, check:
- Searches that found you
- Calls from the profile
- Direction requests
- Website clicks
In GA4, track phone and WhatsApp clicks as conversions. Guide: tracking WhatsApp clicks in GA4.
The bottom line
You can't control how close a customer is, but you can make sure that when they're close, Google picks you. That's local SEO, and it's usually the fastest SEO win for a business with a physical location.
