If you've asked three SEO agencies in Colombo for a price, you've probably had three very different answers, and at least one of them wanted a "discovery call" before saying anything at all. This guide explains what SEO actually costs in Sri Lanka in 2026, what you should get for the money and how to tell a fair price from a bad deal.
The short answer
Most small and medium Sri Lankan businesses spend between LKR 40,000 and LKR 150,000 a month on ongoing SEO. One-time audits usually cost LKR 25,000 to LKR 75,000, depending on the size of the site. Large ecommerce or international projects can go well above that.
At SEOguru.lk, our prices are published on the pricing page: a full audit is LKR 35,000, the Local plan is LKR 45,000 a month and the Growth plan is LKR 85,000 a month.
The three common pricing models
| Model | Typical price in Sri Lanka | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| One-time audit | LKR 25,000 to 75,000 | Finding out what's wrong before committing |
| Monthly retainer | LKR 40,000 to 150,000+ | Ongoing growth in competitive markets |
| Project fee | LKR 60,000 to 300,000+ | Site migrations, redesigns, technical clean-ups |
Hourly consulting also exists, usually for training an in-house team or reviewing a developer's work.
What drives the price up or down
How competitive your keywords are
Ranking a dental clinic in Kurunegala is a different job from ranking for "car rental Sri Lanka" against international platforms. More competition means more content, more links and more time.
How big and how broken your site is
A ten-page WordPress site with a few technical problems is quick to fix. A 5,000-product WooCommerce store with duplicate category pages and a slow server is not.
Whether the work includes doing, or just advising
Some packages deliver a report and leave the fixes to your developer. Others, like ours, include the technical fixes themselves. Doing the work costs more, but it actually gets done.
Content volume
Writing four strong pages a month costs more than writing one. Content is often the largest part of a retainer.
What a fair monthly retainer should include
Whatever you pay, you should get:
- A clear list of target keywords agreed with you
- Technical fixes, or exact instructions for your developer
- New or improved pages each month
- Google Business Profile work if you serve local customers
- A monthly report from your own Google Analytics and Search Console, not just a screenshot from the agency's tool
- A named person you can talk to
If a package doesn't say what work happens each month, ask before you sign.
Cheap SEO: where the risk is
You will find offers of "SEO for LKR 10,000 a month" or "first page guaranteed". At that price, nobody can research, write and fix things properly. What usually happens is one of these:
- Nothing much happens, and you get a monthly report full of vanity numbers.
- Someone buys cheap links from link farms, which can get your site penalised.
- Your keywords are chosen because they're easy to rank for, not because anyone searches for them.
We cover these warning signs in more detail in SEO red flags: why guarantees are a warning sign.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Work it out with your own numbers. If 1,000 people a month search for your main service in your area, and a top-three position earns around 15 to 20% of those clicks, that's 150 to 200 visitors. If 3% enquire and a third of those become customers, that's around two new customers a month. If a customer is worth LKR 100,000 a year, SEO at LKR 45,000 a month pays for itself.
You can play with these numbers using the ROI calculator on our homepage.
How to compare quotes
When you compare SEO proposals, put them side by side and check:
- Deliverables: what exactly happens each month?
- Reporting: whose data, and how often?
- Contract: month to month, or locked in for 12 months?
- Ownership: do you keep the content, accounts and data if you leave?
- Who does the work: the person you met, or an outsourced team?

Start with an audit
If you're not sure what you need, start with an audit. It tells you exactly what's holding your site back, so any monthly spend afterwards goes on the right things. You can also run our free SEO health check on your homepage right now and see your score in 30 seconds.
