What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Sri Lankan Business Owners

What SEO is, how Google decides rankings and what it means for a Sri Lankan business, explained without jargon. Start here if you're new to search engine optimisation.

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of making your website show up when people search Google for what you sell. If you run a hotel in Galle, a law firm in Colombo or an online store shipping across the island, SEO is how customers find you without you paying for every click.

This guide explains what SEO is in plain English, how Google decides who ranks, and what it means for a Sri Lankan business.

How Google decides what to show

When someone searches, Google looks through its index of billions of pages and tries to show the most helpful results. It's not one magic formula. Google weighs many signals, but they fall into a few broad groups:

  • Relevance: does the page actually answer what the person searched?
  • Quality: is the content accurate, useful and written by someone who knows the subject?
  • Authority: do other reputable websites link to and mention this business?
  • Experience: does the page load quickly, work on a phone and avoid annoying pop-ups?
  • Location: for local searches, how close is the business to the searcher?

SEO is the work of improving your site and your online presence on each of these.

The three parts of SEO

1. Technical SEO

This makes sure Google can find, crawl and understand your pages. It covers things like site speed, mobile friendliness, HTTPS, sitemaps and fixing errors. If the technical foundations are broken, nothing else works properly. See our technical SEO checklist.

2. On-page SEO and content

This is about what's on your pages: the words, headings, titles and images. Good on-page SEO means each important page targets a clear topic that people actually search for, and answers it better than the competition.

3. Off-page SEO

This covers signals from outside your website: links from other sites, reviews, mentions in the news and your Google Business Profile. These tell Google that real people trust your business.

Local SEO: the part most Sri Lankan businesses need first

When someone searches "pharmacy near me" or "hotels in Ella", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. That's called the map pack, and getting into it is called local SEO. For shops, clinics, restaurants, hotels and service businesses, this is often where most new customers come from.

SEO versus paid ads

Google Ads put you at the top immediately, but you pay for every click and the traffic stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build, but the traffic keeps coming without a per-click cost. Most businesses benefit from both. We compare them in detail in SEO vs Google Ads in Sri Lanka.

How long does SEO take?

Usually three to six months to see meaningful results for competitive searches, sometimes faster for local or less competitive terms. Technical fixes can show results within weeks. More detail in how long SEO takes.

What SEO is not

  • It's not a one-time job. Competitors keep improving and Google keeps changing.
  • It's not about stuffing keywords into every sentence. That hurts more than it helps.
  • It's not guaranteed. Nobody controls Google's rankings. Anyone promising "number one guaranteed" is a red flag.

What you can do today

  1. Make sure your business has a complete, verified Google Business Profile.
  2. Check your site works well on a phone and loads quickly.
  3. Write a clear page for each main service you offer, using the words customers use.
  4. Set up Google Search Console to see how Google views your site.
  5. Run our free SEO health check to spot the obvious problems.
